The urge to save humanity is almost always a false-face to rule it.
"And I swear, by the power so graciously given to me by the citizen's of all corners of the Earth, that I shall save this world from the immanent self-destruction we are headed toward."
And with this a new regime rose to power, the dictator of which smiled benevolently from Serafima's television. She sneered at it while her team leader sat across the room with his back to the televison, working on a hacking program.
"Shut that d**n thing up, will you, Sera?"
"With pleasure."
An explosion.
"Not exactly what I meant, but close enough."
"These fools don't know what they're getting themselves into."
"It's our job to teach them that. Before its too late."
The image of the new dictator, known as Zachery Cale, smiling innocently, almost lovingly, at the citizens of the world turned Sera's stomach. She was proud to be a member of the resistance. Her team leader was also the leader of the entire organized resistance movement in the southeast Uniter States. And her brother.
The resistance had only one real chance, and that was people like Sera. The Mages. Everything from elements, to time control, to limited mind control, was within the power of certain Mages. Usually they had one power, but occasionally, they were like Sera and inherited two. Fire and sound, for her.
"We gotta go, Sera."
"Did you finish the hack?"
"No, running to slow."
"You don't need me this meeting. I'll try to get it to go through."
"Seriously? Your a lifesaver, Sis."
"I pride myself on that fact, Gabriel. Now, go announce the plan."
Gabe nodded and rushed from the underground base. Sera sat and took over on the computer. She heard the door open back up and the all clear code, so she assumed it was Gabriel. It wasn't.
"Well, well, a dissent in our own back yard."
Sera stood, but before she could even summon a spark, she was unconscious.
The kidnappers were of Zachery's personal team of Mages, and left a message in fire on the wall for Gabriel that would burn but never singe anything that said he would ever give up his co-conspirators or give up his sister's life.
Across the Nation, a young man's father begged for his freedom. A bullet through his brain ended that quickly. The young man was Jason Ari, called Ari by the Underground. He wasn't going down without a fight, though. The air itself would bend to his will, and he pushed it as forcefully as he could at his father's killers. It wan't enough.
He too, was out as something solid made contact with the back of his head. He woke in the back of a dark transport vehicle to the sound of an electrical spark and a yelp of pain.
That was Sera. Trying to free herself and whatever others she could from this prison. Technology working against them. Again.
